Occupational Therapy Program Director

The Program Director provides collaborative leadership to faculty within the discipline(s) of a given instructional Department and serves as the liaison between department faculty and college staff.

Responsibilities and Duties:


  • Meet or exceed budgeted retention rates
  • Ensure that all academic programs meet the standards as established by ACCSC, BPPE, DOE, and other regulatory agencies
  • Follow all academic policies and procedures
  • Ensure that all faculty meet the standards as established by ACCSC, BPPE, DOE, and other regulatory agencies
  • Ensure that attendance and grades are posted in accordance with FERPA and academic guidelines
  • Oversight of department regarding curriculum development and revision, hiring and scheduling of faculty, student advising, instructor training and overall student retention while maintaining classroom instruction as determined by DOE
  • Meet regularly with department Chairpersons at other Campuses to ensure consistency in curriculum, policy and procedure.
  • Assist in the completion of curriculum writing
  • Maintain classroom instruction hours and office hours, as determined by Academic Dean
  • Attend and participate in orientations and open houses
  • Support marketing efforts
  • Supervisor department’s academic support staff and schedule instructors
  • Develop new, innovative teaching techniques to motivate students including use of teaching aids
  • Cover classes or assist with finding coverage when needed
  • Assist admissions with qualifying prospective students who may be challenging core classes


  • Enhance department’s curriculum and oversee new development
  • Assist Admissions with Product Knowledge
  • Implement retention programs
  • Develop and maintain quality and stability of instructors
  • Work with instructors and students to maximize student’s readiness for placement
  • Stay informed of industry standards and incorporate into program offerings accordingly

  • Conduct weekly Satisfactory Academic Progress (Attendance) Meetings with Instructors, Registrar and Dean
  • Field vendor, student and misc. phone calls
  • Assist with oversight of new starts
  • Assist with presentations at Orientation
  • Review Propriety of Books and supplies
  • Check orders for new starts
  • Review class, instructor and scheduling with Dean
  • Resolve conflicts
  • Assist with Hiring of new Instructors
  • Evaluate teaching demos
  • Assist with new instructor scheduling and training
  • Assist with classroom observation of new instructors
  • Supervise substitute coverage as necessary
  • Work with Career Services to facilitate graduates’ preparedness and completion
  • Stay current with industry trends
  • Ensure excellent customer service and professionalism towards all current students, prospective students and coworkers in all departments at all times

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of educational environments including needs of adult learners
  • Ability to provide a positive and effective learning environment
  • Knowledge and understanding of professional career paths for which students are enrolled
  • Motivation, dedication and enthusiasm for teaching 

Credentials and Experience:

  • Must hold a certified Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant License
  • Must hold a minimum of a master’s degree awarded be an institution that is accredited by a regional or national accrediting body (master’s degree is not limited to occupational therapy)
  • Must hold a minimum of an Associate’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited college
  • A minimum of 5 years documented experience in the field of occupational therapy.  Experience must include the following:
  • Clinical practice as an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant
  • Administrative experience including, but not limited to, program planning and implementation, personnel management, evaluation, and budgeting
  • Understanding of and experience with occupational therapy assistants
  • A minimum of 1 year experience in a full time academic appointment with teaching responsibilities at a postsecondary level
  • Good organizational and communication skills

Special Requirements:

  • May need to work evenings, weekends or holidays, per supervisor’s request
  • Attendance at Platt College Graduation Ceremony required
